The weekend just gone saw players from various clubs across the Crewe and District league compete in the Open tournament. With players representing 8 out of the 11 different clubs in the league it was lovely to see such a variety of faces!

The Mens doubles in contrast to previous tournaments was played first based on a few suggestions that players didn’t want to tire themselves out too much by playing the singles before the doubles and running out of steam. We had a good entry of 11 pairs – Richard Jakeman & Matthew Dex, Jack & Dave Raiswell, James Stewart & Carl McGregor-Ogden, Ben Creese & David Gittins and Tom Ravenscroft & Syahmi Shahrizal in the first group and Jez Touch & Matthew Owen, David Dodd & Iain Owen, John Hunter & James Burnham, Tom Bentley & Adam Wilman, Vincent Lim & Dave Lee and Chris Slinn & Marcus Walsh in the second group. Jack & Dave won their group with Richard & Dex coming in as runners up. Tom & Adam won their group with James & John coming in second. All progressed into the semi final which saw Jack & Dave vs John & James and Rich & Matt vs Adam & Tom. Two extremely close games saw Jack & Dave and Rich & Dex progress into the final to face each other again. With a close 21-20 in the round robin it was all to play for and Rich & Dex turned around their previous loss to win 21-19 to take the win.

Only two entries in the ladies singles saw Becky Tong & Kara Robinson battle it out for the title. Some good games with Kara taking the title.

The Womens doubles saw three pairs, Claire & Zoe, Kara & Rachel and Ellie & Becky. Claire & Zoe took all their games to be the clear winners and so it came down to the head to head against Kara & Rachel and Ellie & Beckie. Both were nail biting games with the outcome being 21-19 and 19-21 respectively. With the head to head providing no clear winner it came down to a points tally and with Kara & Rachel gaining slightly more points against Claire & Zoe they took the runners up position.

The mixed saw three pairs, Claire Griffin & Dave Dodd, Jack Raiswell & Zoe Raiswell and Kara Robinson & Rich Jakeman. It was closely contested but Jack & Zoe took the runners up position, narrowly losing out in some really close games to winners Rich & Kara.

There were 9 entries into the Mens singles with entries from Jack Raiswell, David Gittins, Vince Lim, Chris Slinn, Jez Touch, James Stewart, Ben Creese, Marcus Walsh and Matthew Owen. Entries were split into two groups and we had Jack winning the first group with Chris taking the runner up position and in the second group we had a three way tie between Jez, James and Ben. James edged ahead by 1 point to be the winner of the group with Ben just behind. Unfortunately timings meant we had to go to a straight final and so Jack faced James with Jack taking the win.
