The Over 65s group met at Shavington on Tuesday 17th Dec for their pre-Xmas session complete with fancy clothing. The attached photo displays this admirably. Santa Claus is none other than your President - David Sumner (who did not play in the outfit). He was not giving out gifts on court though, he was as ruthless as ever. So much so, that he was throwing himself about on court towards the end and nearly damaged himself irreparably. Happily for all our Crosses friends, a session in the pub over lunch had him back to this best.
On the photo - After Santa left to right then we have League Secretary and South Cheshire player Brian Horrocks, ex Holmes Chapel player Colin Turnock, ex Pheonix player (remember them?) Jon Mace, organiser and ex Crosses Secretary Terry Sumner, ex Congleton player Howard Gregory, ex Malbank player David Guest, ex Congleton and Cheshire county stalwart Dave Lonsdale, Peter Saunders, current South Cheshire and ex Shropshire county player Sue Saunders (yes - connected to Peter), South Cheshire player Kevin Bowker, new Crosses player Helen Dagnall, Crosses player Ray Strickson, South Cheshire (ex ABC) player Linda Edge, trying to hide we have Elaine Moss ex Congleton now Alsager player, ex Alsager and Cheshire county stalwart Mel Pickford.
No-one knows nor can remember any details from the session other than we played quite a lot of games over 2 hours, won a few, lost a few, laughed a lot. Then went to the pub!
Looking ahead - tempus fugit as they say - surely we have some newly minted 65 year olds out there who are or were associated with Crewe and District League who would love to join us for our regular badminton outings. Each one is 2 hours, in mid week day times, at a range of venues in the area covered by the league. Don't be lulled into thinking we just potter about - the standard is quite demanding. Contact Terry or Dave Sumner if you want to join the group - you just need to be 65 years old.
