Each year we award the Tony Hickson trophy to someone who has been a faithful administrative or coaching servant to the league. This is to counter balance the many awards made for actually playing the game. The importance of keeping the league in good shape cannot be over stated.
This year we chose the winner in May but were unable to find a time and place where Meriel could receive the award in front of a suitable audience. The junior league provided the ideal setting as it is Meriel's services to coaching and keeping the junior league in good health that we wanted to reward. Meriel has organised the Wizards junior club for many years and the club have been stalwarts of the junior league for a good part of that. In presenting the trophy, David Sumner (JL organiser) and Brian Horrocks (League Secretary) explained this to the crowd who were mainly the young people who we hope will provide the lifeblood of the senior league in years to come. Meriel is also a very capable player, representing Goostrey and also Cheshire Masters. It is her playing expertise that Meriel imparts to the juniors.
Many thanks Meriel for your services to Crewe and District Badminton League. (Photo attached)
