\r\n

Last Sunday (5th March) we concluded this seasons Junior League. Another really good day of Badminton in MMU with the added bonus of silver ware being handed out. Karl Bergh the\r\n Cheshire CBA Chairman and his wife Jan came down from Wallasey to be with us and to present the trophies. Dave Sumner opened proceedings with his long list of thanks – probably the key one being the coaches and team managers who organise the kids ready to\r\n play. Very well done to that team, there would be no event without you. Karl said a few words, most notable was his praise for the work done by Crewe League. We are in many ways leading the pack in Junior Badminton. Once again the season has produced lots\r\n of young players with the experience and temperament needed for competing. This is a superb grounding for later life, be it on the Badminton court or life more generally.

\r\n

\r\n

The outcome was as follows (remembering that sessions 3 and 4 are cumulative):

\r\n

\r\n

Division1 – as always this division was contested by players who would not be out of place in senior badminton. In the main they are 16 to 18 years old and can pack a punch. Shavington A sent\r\n out a squad of younger players due to the unavailability of the older chaps. This was great experience for them. Inevitably they found it tough going and ended up at the base of the table on 1 point, but the investment for next season is clearly apparent.\r\n Wizards were next in third position on 5 points, and Alsager were in second place on 7 points. Champions once again were a very strong Congleton team finishing on 11 points. They only dropped one point and that in a 3-3 draw with Wizards.

Division 2 – started the day as a two horse race but ended in convincing style. Nantwich A and Canute B were always the slightly weaker teams and they ended up in positions 3 and 4 respectively.\r\n Nantwich getting their points in a 6-0 win over Canute B. Rudheath dropped a point to Nantwich in the 3-3 draw and were then beaten by eventual winners Canute A 4-2 who enjoyed three wins on the day and so were crowned champions

Division 3 – had some intra-club rivalry going on. Shavington B and C competed. In the end it was a non-event as Shavington C had to pull out on the day. They still ended up on 4 points. Nantwich\r\n B propped the table up on 1 point. That meant Shavington B and Alsager B were vying for the title. Alsager won the match between the two 5-1 which proved decisive. Alsager took the title by the margin of 1 point from Shavington.

Division 4 – had a busy day. There were 5 teams in this division meaning several more matches. They started earlier than most of the others. Canute C had not competed on day 1 back in January so carried no points forward. They added just\r\n the 1 point through a 3-3 draw with Crosses ending up at the base of the table. Crosses themselves came 4th. There was another intra-club rivalry going here with Wizards B and Wizards C. As the form book would expect their B team beat their C team\r\n by 6-0 hence ensuring a 2nd place finish over their club rivals. Top spot went to Kidsgrove who in their first season got a maximum 14 points from their 7 matches. Congratulations to them.

Division 5 – was a fascinating contrast in size and style. Weaverham brought a team of older kids and they ended up facing some of our youngest kids. This is the beauty of Junior League. No gender barriers, no age barriers beyond 18 years\r\n old. Nantwich C gave their best but salvaged just the one point. Wizards D  ended up with a creditable 5 points. Shavington D were on 6 points, however Weaverham cleaned up winning all their matches across two sessions dropping just two games in the process.\r\n Congratulations to Weaverham.

We meet in the summer to discuss and set up season 2017-18. As always if any of the participants wish t send in suggestions of how we can make it even better – we are listening. Why not call Dave Sumner or Brian Horrocks with your ideas.\r\n We’d love to hear them.
